about

Composed by Obdulio Morales (1910–1981)
Arranged by Andrew Roitstein

Personal Note from Andrew Roitstein:
I first heard singer Caridad Cuervo’s (1946–1988) recording of “Dame Bururú” in 2002. I had just moved to New York, and would spend hours listening to CD’s in Tower Records on the Upper West Side. I picked up Cuervo’s album, “Yo Quiero Bailar,” and instantly became a fan. I learned soon that Cuervo recorded several of the songs on this compilation when she was only thirteen years old, and had been a protegé of Celia Cruz’s. When I arranged “Dame Bururú” for strings, one of the most fun challenges was capturing the crisp and perpetually flowing conga drums in Yoyo Casteleiro’s band. Ultimately, I gave the cello the role of congero, with a little help from the viola!

lyrics

Dame bururú mi vida
Dame bururú mi santo
Dame bururú mi prieto
Dámelo, dámelo tú (2x)

Ay en la selva, señor,
Se escucho un raro tambor
Dicen que tiene tabú
Todo le llaman bururú-rú-rú-rú

Dame bururú mi vida
Dame bururú mi santo
Dame bururú mi prieto
Dámelo, dámelo tú

(Instrumental Break)

Dame bururú mi vida
Dame bururú mi santo
Dame bururú mi prieto
Dámelo, dámelo tú (2x)

Ay en la selva, señor,
Se escucho un raro tambor
Dicen que tiene tabú
Todo le llaman bururú-rú-rú-rú

Dame bururú mi vida
Dame bururú mi santo
Dame bururú mi prieto
Dámelo, dámelo tú

Lo lindo
Mi puchungito
Un besito
Mi cariñito
Yo te quiero
Cosita rica
Dámelo, dámelo tú!
