about

Toomai String Quintet's debut album, Cuerdas Cubanas, celebrates Cuba’s rich musical legacy through a quintessential collection of Cuban songs recast as modern string arrangements. This album features treasured compositions by Ernesto Lecuona as well as salsa, bolero, and mambo classics.

The New York-based quintet presents a range of Cuban styles in eleven tightly-orchestrated, superbly balanced tracks that are rooted in traditional rhythms and passionate melodies. Executed with top-drawer instrumental virtuosity, the album pays homage to the great artistic lineage of Lecuona, Cachao, Beny Moré, and Celia Cruz through the lens of a string quintet.

Special guest Alina Roitstein lends her dynamic voice to several tracks to represent the spirit of the great Cuban American Songbook.
